Replacing a garage door is one of the highest-return improvements you can make to a home’s curb appeal. But the right door for San Diego isn’t always the right door for, say, Phoenix. Here’s how we talk homeowners through it.
Steel
The workhorse. Insulated steel doors are affordable, low-maintenance, and come in finishes that convincingly mimic wood (the slate finish above is steel). For most homes inland of the coast, this is the value pick.
Real wood
Beautiful and unmistakably premium — but wood needs sealing and re-sealing, especially within a few miles of the ocean. We install plenty of cedar carriage doors in La Jolla and Coronado for owners who want the real thing and don’t mind the upkeep.
Full-view aluminum & glass
Modern, light-filled, and increasingly popular on coastal remodels. They’re heavier than they look, so the spring system has to be spec’d carefully. Tempered glass and anodized frames hold up well to salt air.
The marine-air factor
Within a few miles of the coast, salt accelerates corrosion on springs, hinges, and fasteners. Whatever door you choose, we use galvanized hardware and recommend a yearly lubrication service.
