Clopay Plank Garage Doors: Two Recent Poway Installs

Plank-style doors have been the most requested look on our trucks this year, and it is easy to see why. Instead of the raised rectangles most people picture when they hear “garage door,” the plank design runs long horizontal boards across the face of the door in varying widths and tones — closer to a hardwood floor or a modern fence line than to a traditional panel door.

We finished two of them recently, both in Poway. Same family of Clopay doors, two completely different results.

A deep walnut finish with modern window slots

This home had the pieces already working — stone veneer across the front, a low-slung roofline, mature palms. What it needed was a garage that belonged to the same house.

The pairing here is a single-car and a two-car opening side by side, both in a dark walnut finish with the plank courses staggered so no two lines up exactly. The narrow window slots are the detail that makes it: four to a door, black frames, obscured glass. They pull daylight into the garage without putting the inside of it on display for the street, and the black framing ties back to the window trim on the upper floor.

Dark finishes like this one do a specific job on a stone facade. Rather than competing with the stonework, the doors sit back and let the stone read as the texture, while the wood grain keeps the whole front from feeling cold.

A warm natural tone, kept clean and simple

Different house, opposite direction — and just as effective.

This is a mid-century ranch with light stucco, flagstone accents, and a modern front door. The plank door went in with no windows at all and a dark bronze perimeter frame, and the honey and amber tones in the boards became the warmest thing on the elevation. Against the pale stucco it reads almost like furniture.

The restraint is the point. On a house with this much going on at ground level — stamped concrete, stonework, cactus and succulents — a door with windows and hardware would have been one more thing to look at. A clean run of wood grain gives the eye somewhere to rest.

Why the plank look works well here

Poway and the rest of inland North County are full of 1960s and 70s ranch homes, and most of them were built with a flat, featureless garage door that has since faded to the color of nothing in particular. That door is usually the largest single surface on the front of the house. Replacing it is the cheapest way to change the entire look of a home without touching the house itself.

The plank design is a good fit for that housing stock specifically:

  • It suits the architecture. Long horizontal lines complement low rooflines and wide, single-story elevations. It rarely looks bolted on the way an ornate carriage-house door can on a ranch.
  • It works with a wide range of colors. Wood tones sit comfortably next to stucco, stone, brick, and the darker trim colors that have taken over remodels around here.
  • The tone sets the mood. The same door in walnut and in natural wood are two different statements — one grounded and formal, one warm and relaxed. Worth seeing samples in daylight before you commit.

Thinking about it for your house?

A few things we talk through with every homeowner: whether you want windows and how private you want the garage to be, how the door color will sit against the trim you already have, and how much sun that side of the house takes. Inland, a west-facing door takes real afternoon heat through the summer, and that is worth factoring into the finish you pick.
